Join us as we map not just the trails but the breakthroughs, where faith enters the crucible of the Himalayas’ harsh beauty and every step is a prayer

The Significance of Do Dham in Hindu Mythology

There are a series of legends in the Do Dham Yatra that tie us to the divine. Kedarnath is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Shiva and is associated with the Mahabharata’s epilogue: the Pandavas are said to have come here to seek his forgiveness after the Kurukshetra war. Shiva avoided them and dived into the ground as a bull and pushed his hump through the ground as a favorable omen and sign of penance and cosmic justice. Vishnu lives in eternity in Badrinath. According to legend he meditated here as Nar-Narayan and was transformed to black stone to save the celestial gods from the demons. Adi Shankaracharya reinstated the temple and consecrated it as a Vaishnavite shrine. Kedarnath and Badrinath also symbolize the cosmic duo- Shiva the destroyer- redeemer and Vishnu, the preserver of the Hindu pantheon. The pilgrims also believe that a visit to both will cleanse themselves of their sins, end desire and lead to ultimate salvation. These shrines are not mere stations but a living fabric of faith where myth melds with mountains and awakens the pilgrim in you.
