30 Ways to use an old yoga mat

So, what can we do with an old yoga mat, so that it is useful:

  • An old yoga mat makes a great pet feeding mat, can be easily washed and cut to the desired shape or size.

  • You can donate your rug to a shelter for homeless animals. Most of these places need soft and warm flooring so that animals do not lie on bare ground or concrete, especially in winter. Helpless and homeless animals need help too!

  • You can cut out shapes for decorations from the rug – leaves, cars, snowflakes and other shapes that can be used for original room decoration or for playing with children.

  • A yoga mat is a good material for children’s creativity. Use a craft knife or scissors to cut out shapes, letters, numbers, etc. This is a great workout for little fingers.

  • You can cut the mat into squares and use them as elements for active games with children on the playground.

  • Kids’ toys: Cut out circles or frisbees from rugs; cut out holes to create masks, helmets, costumes and props; cut out shapes and letters for the bath and pool.

  • The mat is also a good protection for your car when transporting animals. You can lay an old mat on the back seat of your car and your dog will be able to do his version of “downward facing dog” there without scratching the upholstery of the seat and doors.

  • An old yoga mat can be used in the car when it is very hot. It can be placed on the dashboard and steering wheel, to protect the interior from direct sunlight.

  • Flooring for “dirty” children’s games! An old carpet will be a great flooring for playing with play dough, paints and other not-so-clean projects. Cleaning a rug is much easier than washing and cleaning the entire apartment.

  • The mat can be used in the workshop to protect the surface from slipping when using power tools.

  • Put yoga mats on kitchen shelves – items will be less likely to get scratched and will not slide on the surface. It also makes cleaning cabinets easier. A great alternative to the IKEA mat.

  • An old rug can be used as a cushion for the bottom of the furniture, to protect the floor surface. Cut the desired size and fix the pieces with glue. One rug will last a very long time!

  • Yoga mats will help you remove weeds from your garden. Just place the mat on any part of your garden, the weeds and their seeds will die under the mat, heated by the sun. After some time, the mat can be moved to a new place.

  • You can make knee pads for gardening from the rugs – cut them into small squares, tie the edges around the knee with a rope. Summer residents will appreciate it!

  • Cut into pieces to support artificial flowers in vases.

  • The mat can be cut into strips and used for drainage in flower pots.

  • Mats are convenient inserts for various drawers, especially for storing fragile items, tools, etc.

  • Use an old beach rug as a mat on the sand, pebbles or lounge chair.

  • Use a rug for outdoor activities when you need to sit or lie down – it is better to do this on a nice and warm rug than on the cold ground.
